The Opening of Norway’s First Hydrogen Fueling Station

Driving a car is the most polluting act an average citizen commits. In Norway, the first hydrogen filling station for motor vehicles was opened as a step in creating a clean-air highway in Norway.

By 2009, a joint effort called HyNor plans to have enough fueling stations to make a trip between the capital, Oslo, and western Norway’s port of Stavanger. “Road travel contributes substantially to the emissions of climate damaging gasses,” said Norwegian Environment Minister Helen Bjoernoey at the opening of the ceremony. “Development of hydrogen vehicles and infrastructure for them are important to ensuring more environmentally friendly transport.” The HyNor plan calls for five refueling stations along the main highway to Olso. In the long run HyNor would like to extend its network through much of Scandinavia.

I found Norway’s plan to be hopeful yet unachievable. Although, their plan benefits the environment, the vehicles remain expensive, have short range and, in most areas, have few places to refuel. Reality is that one would rather pollute the environment to get to a destination faster than stopping at a hydrogen fueling station to fill up their tank.
